The warm weather has been with us for almost 2 weeks now – glorious sunny days and light summer nights. The other evening, some of our friends kayaked over from Connel to visit us and landed on our beach….

We are open again for business from 12 February onwards and look forward to welcoming you to Dun na mara in 2009. The weather has been predictably cold, though with some amazing crisp, sunny days. The winter snow has just hit us today and the scenery is looking stunning.

For the second year running, we have been nominated for Scottish Guesthouse of the Year by Hotel Review Scotland, and also for Guesthouse breakfast of the year (if you’d like to vote for us through the link above, feel free!). The winners will be announced at the end of February.

autumn @ dun na mara

The clocks have changed and the days are getting shorter, heralding the arrival of a fabulous display of autumn colours in the countryside around dun na mara. We are also experiencing some strong winds and stormy seas, adding the drama (thanks to Mark and Ian for the photo).

It’s been a good season for wildlife this year. All the local boat tour operators have reported frequent sightings of whales and basking sharks, as well as dolphins, seals and sea eagles.

Closer to home, we have regularly seen a couple of otters playing in the water off the beach in front of the house and wild deer are often seen in the garden. But the highlight of our year has been the occasional appearance of pine martens in the garden, coinciding with a distinct lack of rabbits….!

Summer has returned at last, after a few grey weeks. The thermometer outside our front door reached a staggering 30 degrees C yesterday afternoon, not bad for Scotland!

We are thrilled to have won Guesthouse of the Year at the Scottish Hotels of the Year Awards 2008 – our first award since we opened in 2003 and a great start to the year! Thanks to all our guests who voted for us. The Awards ceremony was a fabulous party at Prestonfield House Hotel in Edinburgh, on the same night as the Oscars so suitably theatrical in its presentation.

After a wet and windy January, we have been basking in glorious sunshine all week. We took the opportunity to go across to the isle of Kerrara for a walk (see photo).
